Mercury is present in the environment through natural processes such as forest fires or volcanic activity.  Most commonly it is present from coal combustion, refined petroleum products, extraction of metals from ore, the use and disposal of mercury containing consumer products, and use in some manufacturing processes.  Most of the mercury in the Lake Superior sediment and near the St. Louis River mouth is atmospherically derived. Because Lake Trout are so large, they have higher concentrations of mercury.
